Available in Work Truck, LS, LT1, LT2, and LTZ trim levels; in Regular, Extended, and Crew Cab body styles; and in 5.8-foot, 6.6-foot, and 8.2-foot bed lengths, the 2008 Silverado 1500 gets its power from one of 4 different engines: a 195-horsepower 4.3-liter V6 with 260 pound-feet of torque, a 295-horsepower 4.8-liter V8 with 305 pound-feet of torque, a 315-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 with 338 pound-feet of torque, or a 367-horsepower 6.0-liter V8 with 375 pound-feet of torque that can rocket the truck from 0 to 60 mph in only 7.9 seconds. Every Silverado includes a 4-speed automatic transmission with a tow/haul mode as its one and only transmission. However, drivers do get a choice when it comes to drivetrain: either rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive. 4WD on the 2 lowest trim levels features a traditional floor-mounted transfer case selector; 4WD on all the other trim levels include Autotrac, which automatically shifts into 4WD when the system detects any of the wheels slipping. When properly equipped with the Max Trailering Package, which include the 6.0L engine, maximum towing capacity goes up to 10,500 pounds. Fuel economy maxes out on the 4.3L models at 15 city/20 highway MPG, but even the 5.3-liter V8 4WD is no slouch at 14 city/19 highway MPG, making it one of the most efficient V8s on the market today.
